Unitarian Universalists of the Salish Sea

Unitarian Universalism

Unitarian Universalists are committed to justice and inclusion. Our tradition has been at the forefront of welcoming people of all ages and abilities who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and gender-nonconforming. Nearly all our congregations are certified Welcoming Congregations. We work for racial justice and for truth, healing, and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. We welcome people from all racial, religious, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds, and want to learn what you have to teach us, from your background and experience. We want to include you in our faith community, where shared values are more important than shared beliefs. We are united by our values, our broad and inclusive outlook, and our commitment to love and justice.

Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote eight Principles, which we hold as strong values and moral guides. We live out these Principles within a “living tradition” of wisdom and spirituality, drawn from sources as diverse as science, poetry, scripture, and personal experience.

  1. 1st Principle: The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  2. 2nd Principle: Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
  3. 3rd Principle: Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
  4. 4th Principle: A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  5. 5th Principle: The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
  6. 6th Principle: The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
  7. 7th Principle: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
  8. 8th Principle: Individual and communal action that accountably dismantles racism and systemic barriers to full inclusion in ourselves and our institutions

We acknowledge that we live on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem First Nation), which lies within the shared territories of the Tsleil-Waututh, Katzie, Musqueam, Qayqayt, Squamish, and Sto’:lo Nations. We thank the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm who continue
to live on these lands and care for them, along with the waters and all that is above and below
