June 21st is National Indigenous People’s Day
It's a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Turtle Island. From Jessica regarding the New Horizons for Seniors Program - Community-Based Project

Our UUSS congregation has an opportunity to apply— in partnership with Jessica MM--for a federal seniors-helping-seniors community grant. The CUC is generously offering to coach us during the grant application process, with a deadline of July 14. We have been invited to attend the CUC informational meeting this Sunday, June 21 at 5pm to learn more about this grant opportunity from the CUC. Jessica is hoping our congregation will want to partner with her in supporting this BEE-long fraud awareness project which she has researched and developed over the past two years. If you agree, we would not just be adding our UUSS name to the project, but also participating in community outreach and providing meaningful, supportive roles.

Very briefly, this BEE-long program is a pilot project. It would: (1) bring seniors together to record various types of scams that they observe over a 12-week period; (2) gather on a bi-weekly basis for facilitated activities designed to build friendships and discuss what, from their observations, rises to the top as the most urgent issues; and (3) teach back to each other and the wider community about the complexities of financial fraud and learn more about seniors’ needs. These seniors will then be invited to use various creative storytelling methods (comics, poetry, music, etc.) to teach back what they have learned. All throughout the project, friendship, humour, and play will be encouraged as ways to grow genuine community connection. Jessica will bring her three decades of award-winning teaching expertise to the program. Some of what the BEE-long project would be asking from our congregation is: help recruiting participants from the wider community, proving a home for our launch party and our final public celebration, and administrative, fiscal, and mentorship support. In return for that support, the grant allows up to $12,500 to come directly to our congregation for administration. Jessica would also ask for an honorarium for the professional facilitation of sessions and project management of this BEE-long pilot.

The CUC is eager to help us through the grant application process. If we receive the grant, together we would get to be part of something that could genuinely change how fraud awareness, community building, and advocacy get done in this country. Please reach out to Jessica or anyone on the planning team if you have concerns about or suggestions for this initiative.
