Welcome Maeve Lynn Earl Patterson-Gram!

Born at 3:42 am, August 23rd, 2025 to Yette Gram and Liam Patterson-Morris

It’s been clear since she arrived on the planet that Maeve is a feisty little one, born with a full head of hair, chuffing like a tiger, immediately ready to eat and indeed to scratch the OR pediatrician trying to weigh her for interrupting her meal.

We got home on the 25th and have settled nicely into a family routine, namely eating, snuggling, and occasionally hanging out outside in her stroller or carrier. Maeve is already meeting our family, friends and neighbours through visits and little neighbourhood excursions. We are all healthy and recovering well, and can't wait to introduce her to all of you.

We've given Maeve the middle name Lynn in honour of our own beloved Lynn Sabourin, who would have been one of her biggest fans. We hope to instill in Maeve some of the characteristics that made Lynn so special.

Hopefully she doesn't take after Lynn's abysmal sense of physical direction, but through giving her this name and the stories we plan to share with her, we hope she will take some direction from the life Lynn led and the lessons we learned from her. From her influence on Yette (and many, many others) through the children's program at North Shore, and more recently from working with her as we set up UUs of the Salish Sea, Lynn demonstrated for all of us how to make people feel seen and loved, how to be creative and silly and dignified all at once, and how to take every opportunity to make the world more beautiful, whether that meant choosing the perfect table linens for worship or attending protests for social justice.

We look forward to rejoining you all as soon as we are able.

- Yette and Liam

We are invited to Lynn's Celebration of Life service by Lynn's family: Doug,Ryan, Colin and Derek . This which will be held Saturday, September 13th at 2:00 at the Vancouver Unitarian Church, 949 W 49th Ave.

Reclaiming Education: A Conversation with Watsenniiostha Nelson, Director of Education, Kanehsatà:ke

Wednesday, Sep 17, 2025 @ 4

Join us for a powerful conversation with Watsenniiostha Nelson, Director of Education for the Kanehsatà:ke Mohawk community, as she shares her vision for transforming education from a tool of assimilation into a pathway of reclamation and empowerment.

In the wake of the residential school legacy, Nelson is working to center Indigenous voices and faces in the classroom, confront the roots of absenteeism, and create spaces where young people can thrive in their full identity.

As part of the CUC’s ongoing commitment to Truth, Healing and Reconciliation, this event is held in the month of the 10th anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Final Report. We are all invited to come together to listen, learn, and reflect on how education can be a site of healing, resurgence, and hope.

Hosted by: Amber Bellemare, Reconciliation Programme Coordinator & Camellia Jahanshahi, Dismantling Barriers Lead.

From Anne Mayall Small Groups

I am excited to let you know we have subscribed this season to the Meaning Making Project. This is curriculum produced by a Canadian group of UU ministers and replaces the Soul Matters packets we have used previously. We are attaching the October packet, which we hope will provide food for thought, growth and your spiritual journey.

You may want to use this alone. You may find you want to explore the monthly themes with others in a small group, either virtually or in person. You may want to create your own group, or we can help facilitate that. Let’s get creative!

Small groups are a time proven way to develop deeper connections and support within our community. I am eager and happy to talk to you about my enthusiasm for this way of “doing church”.

Anne Mayall
