Covenant Creation Workshop

Unitarian Universalism is a covenantal faith, not a creedal faith. The heart of our communities is the covenant (promises) we make to each other, not shared religious beliefs. Covenants help us to balance the needs of individual expression with attending to communal goals and invites us deeper and deeper into Beloved Community.

Covenant also helps us differentiate between behaviour and individual inherent worth. The promises we make are about how we treat each other, our behaviour, and what we do when we don’t keep our promises. It affirms that how we act towards each other and the collective, not who we are or what we believe, is how we define membership. Beloved Community and Covenant require individuals to surrender some degree of autonomy in service of collective purpose.

Because our covenant is central to our faith, we hope you will join us in person for our Covenant Creation Workshop on Sunday, January 28th, from 1:30 pm until 6 pm. We will have a zoom option, but want to encourage you to take the opportunity to be together in person!

The workshop will include time for self-reflection and creative expression of what you believe our covenant should include.  There will be art supplies, collage materials and journaling prompts to help you express your vision. We will also share a simple meal of soup and bread afterwards. The soup will be provided so please do not bring a potluck dish.

Below is the schedule:

1:30 to 3:00: Covenanting visioning exercise

3:00 to 3:15: Break

3:15 to 4:30: Build our initial Covenant using the values, needs and elements that arose from the collages, art or journaling.

4:30 to 5:30: Dinner - provided

5:30 to 6:00 Clean up

If you are willing to volunteer to support this event, please email catherine or Laura.  You can also reach catherine at 778-686-1236.

The workshop location is Cranberry Commons Cohousing, 4272 Albert St, Burnaby. Albert is one street north of Hastings, and Cranberry Commons is on the corner of Madison and Albert Streets. Park on any street nearby or in (unmetered 2-hour parking) city lots on both the southwest and southeast corners of Madison and Albert. At the front gate (on Albert) please dial 726 for the Common House and someone will buzz you in. The Common House is straight ahead on your right. If you are lost, please call Cindy’s cell: 778-995-8034.

Several buses run along Hastings, including a rapid bus; depending on which bus, the nearest stops are Madison or Gilmore (walk two blocks east).

We acknowledge that we live on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem First Nation), which lies within the shared territories of the Tsleil-Waututh, Katzie, Musqueam, Qayqayt, Squamish, and Sto’:lo Nations. We thank the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm who continue
to live on these lands and care for them, along with the waters and all that is above and below
